1. Norway Rat (Brown Rat)

Also known as the common street or sewer rat, Norway rats are large, with blunt noses and small ears. They typically live in basements, crawl spaces, or burrow outside along foundations. These rats are strong swimmers and often invade lower levels of buildings.

2. Roof Rat (Black Rat)

Roof rats are smaller and more slender than Norway rats, with pointed noses and large ears. They’re excellent climbers and prefer to nest in attics, rafters, and upper parts of homes. These rats are commonly found in coastal or warmer climates.

3. Woodrat (Packrat)

Woodrats are known for their tendency to collect shiny or small objects. They build large nests out of twigs and debris and are typically found in rural areas or around woodpiles and sheds. While not as common indoors, they can still be a nuisance near homes.

4. Marsh Rice Rat

These rats are semi-aquatic and typically found in wetland areas. Though not usually a household pest, they may occasionally wander into buildings near water sources. They’re known carriers of certain viruses and bacteria.
